Review Of 'How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World'
(Warning: Spoilers)
Going into the theatre, I was a little bit skeptical that this film would live up to the standards of the last two; I was left shocked at the new high bar it set. When you have a movie with sequels, most times they end up getting increasingly worse as the story continues - that doesn't happen with this franchise. From the get-go, we're thrown into the action and suspense that this film holds. The story began to build up from the second it started and kept a believable feel. The opening scenes showed Hiccup and his friends releasing dragons from a crew of dragon hunters. It isn't long after that when we meet the main villain of the movie, Grimmel. Grimmel was the dragon slayer who had killed all of the Night Furys - with exception to Toothless. For a children's movie, Grimmel is a very well thought out character with understandable motives - to finish what he had started. He's shown as being manipulative and cunning, always being one step ahead of the heroes. The climax of the film was executed perfectly and kept viewers guessing at what would end up happening. All of the graphics were amazing, as well. The ending, however, was a true tearjerker. Watching the characters grow up and evolve was mesmerizing to watch. Then seeing all of the dragon riders releasing their dragons to be free and happy was the perfect ending to this series. It would be a lie if I said that I didn't shed any tears while watching the conclusion. Well done Dreamworks, you couldn't have released a better finish to these films.
My rating:
8.5/10
